Trauma-Specific Therapy
Understanding Trauma-Specific Therapy
What Is Trauma-Specific Therapy?
Trauma-specific therapy encompasses a range of specialised clinical approaches designed to address the psychological, emotional, and physical impact of traumatic experiences. At Haliford Health Group, we understand that trauma lies at the heart of many addictions, as Dr Gabor Mate articulates, the question is not “why the addiction?” but “why the pain?”
Our trauma-informed approach recognises that traumatic experiences, whether a single event, prolonged exposure, or complex developmental trauma, alter the way the brain processes threat, emotion, and memory. These changes often drive individuals towards substance use or compulsive behaviours as a means of coping with unbearable psychological pain.
Our clinical teams are trained in multiple trauma-focused modalities, allowing us to match the therapeutic approach to your individual needs and readiness. These include somatic experiencing, which addresses trauma held in the body; narrative therapy, which helps you reclaim and reshape your personal story; and trauma-focused cognitive behavioural approaches that target specific traumatic memories and their associated beliefs.
We take a phased approach to trauma treatment, prioritising safety and stabilisation before moving into deeper processing work. This ensures that you are adequately resourced and supported at every stage, reducing the risk of retraumatisation and building a solid foundation for lasting recovery.
What to Expect
Trauma-specific therapy at Haliford Health Group begins with a comprehensive assessment to understand the nature and impact of your experiences. Your therapist will work with you to establish safety, build coping resources, and develop a therapeutic relationship of trust before engaging in any trauma processing work.
Treatment is delivered through individual sessions and may be complemented by group-based trauma recovery work. Your therapist will draw on a range of approaches, including somatic techniques, narrative reconstruction, and cognitive processing, depending on what is most appropriate for your situation. The pace of treatment is guided by your readiness, and your therapist will regularly check in to ensure you feel safe and supported.
Our trauma-specific therapy is integrated with your wider treatment programme, including medical support, psychiatric care, and other therapeutic modalities such as EMDR, mindfulness, and schema therapy.

Conditions Treated with Trauma-Specific Therapy
Trauma-specific therapy addresses the psychological wounds that frequently underlie addiction, mental health disorders, and emotional dysregulation. At Haliford Health Group, we recognise that unresolved trauma is one of the most common drivers of substance use and mental health challenges — and we treat it directly, rather than as a secondary concern.
Our trauma-informed clinical teams at Cherrywood House, Anker Huis, and Villa Consano are trained in a range of specialised trauma therapies, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), somatic approaches, and trauma-focused CBT. Treatment is paced carefully to ensure clients are clinically stable and sufficiently resourced before deeper trauma processing begins.
All three facilities offer trauma-specific therapy as part of an integrated residential programme, with ongoing support from psychiatrists and psychologists throughout the trauma treatment process.
