Addiction Treatment in South Africa
Evidence-Based Recovery Programmes Across Three Specialist Facilities
Understanding Addiction
Addiction is a complex, chronic condition that affects the brain, the body, and every aspect of a person’s life. It is not a moral failing, nor is it simply a matter of willpower. Modern clinical understanding recognises addiction as a condition born of the interaction between environment, innate traits, and psychological strain, often rooted in unresolved pain, trauma, or emotional distress.
Whether the addiction involves alcohol, drugs, prescription medication, or compulsive behaviours, the underlying patterns are remarkably similar. Over time, the brain’s reward system becomes hijacked, making it increasingly difficult for the individual to stop without professional support. Relationships, careers, physical health, and mental wellbeing all suffer as the addiction takes hold.
The good news is that addiction is treatable. With the right clinical support, a personalised programme, and ongoing aftercare, lasting recovery is achievable. At Haliford Health Group, we have helped individuals and families affected by addiction find their way back to healthy, fulfilling lives.
At the heart of our approach is a simple but powerful question: not “why the addiction?” but “why the pain?” By understanding the root causes driving addictive behaviour, our clinical teams can address the whole person, not just the symptoms.

Signs That You or a Loved One May Need Help
– Increasing tolerance: needing more of a substance or behaviour to achieve the same effect
– Withdrawal symptoms when the substance or behaviour is stopped
– Loss of control: using more than intended, or being unable to stop despite wanting to
– Neglecting responsibilities at work, home, or in relationships
– Continued use despite negative consequences to health, finances, or relationships
– Secrecy, dishonesty, or isolation from loved ones
– Loss of interest in activities that once brought joy
– Using substances or behaviours to cope with stress, emotional pain, or difficult feelings
