12-Step Integration

Understanding 12-Step Integration

What Is 12-Step Integration?

The 12-Step model, originally developed by Alcoholics Anonymous, is one of the most widely recognised recovery frameworks in the world. At Haliford Health Group, we integrate 12-Step principles within our broader evidence-based treatment approach, offering clients the structure and community of the 12-Step tradition alongside our clinical programme.

It is important to note that our approach is one of integration rather than exclusive reliance. We recognise that 12-Step programmes offer valuable tools, including honest self-assessment, accountability, peer support, and a structured framework for personal growth, whilst understanding that not every individual connects with every element of the traditional model. Our clinicians adapt 12-Step principles to suit your beliefs, values, and recovery goals.

The 12-Step framework encourages individuals to acknowledge the impact of their addiction, take responsibility for their actions, make meaningful amends, and build a sustainable recovery lifestyle supported by community connection. These principles align closely with the broader therapeutic goals of our treatment programmes and provide a practical roadmap for ongoing recovery beyond formal treatment.

At Haliford Health Group, 12-Step integration may include participation in facilitated step work, attendance at fellowship meetings, engagement with peer support structures, and exploration of the principles of acceptance, responsibility, and personal growth that underpin the 12-Step philosophy.

What to Expect

12-Step integration at Haliford Health Group is woven into your treatment programme in a way that respects your individual perspective. You will have the opportunity to engage with 12-Step principles through facilitated group sessions, individual counselling discussions, and, where available and appropriate, attendance at external fellowship meetings.

Your counsellor will work with you to explore the relevance and application of 12-Step concepts to your personal recovery, adapting the language and framework to align with your beliefs and preferences. The emphasis is on practical recovery tools: honest self-reflection, accountability, making amends, and building a supportive community network.

For those who find particular value in the 12-Step approach, we support continued engagement with fellowship communities as part of aftercare planning, helping you connect with local meetings and peer support networks in your home community.

  • Compassionate, Client-Centred Care: Every decision is made with our clients’ best interests at heart. We walk alongside you in your recovery; no judgements, no assumptions.

Conditions Supported by 12-Step Integration

The 12-Step model is one of the most widely used and long-standing frameworks for addiction recovery worldwide. At Haliford Health Group, 12-Step integration forms part of a broader, evidence-based treatment approach — used alongside clinical therapy, psychiatric support, and holistic interventions to provide a comprehensive recovery framework.

12-Step principles and meetings are available across all three HHG facilities as part of the residential programme. Clients are introduced to the 12-Step philosophy and supported in applying its principles within the context of their overall treatment plan. Fellowship attendance may also form part of the structured aftercare plan following discharge.

Our clinical team works with each client to determine the extent to which 12-Step integration is appropriate for their background, beliefs, and treatment goals — ensuring it complements rather than conflicts with other therapeutic work.

Our 12-Step Facilitators

12-Step integration is available at Cherrywood House and across our wider programme. Facilitation is provided by experienced counsellors who understand both the clinical and experiential dimensions of 12-Step recovery. Your treatment team ensures that 12-Step work is integrated with your broader therapeutic plan for maximum benefit.
