Group Therapy
Understanding Group Therapy
What Is Group Therapy?
Group therapy is a cornerstone of addiction and mental health treatment, providing a structured environment where individuals can share experiences, offer mutual support, and develop interpersonal skills under the guidance of qualified facilitators. At Haliford Health Group, group therapy is an integral part of our treatment programmes across all three facilities.
Addiction and mental health challenges often thrive in isolation. Group therapy breaks through this isolation by creating a community of peers who understand the realities of recovery. In a group setting, you discover that you are not alone in your struggles, that others share similar experiences, and that collective wisdom can be a powerful force for healing.
Our group therapy programme includes a range of formats designed to address different aspects of recovery. Clinician-led groups focus on specific therapeutic topics such as relapse prevention, emotional regulation, self-awareness, and responsibility. These sessions incorporate psychoeducation, skills training, and experiential exercises facilitated by qualified counsellors and psychologists.
Peer-led groups complement the clinical programme by providing a space for clients to practise skills, share insights, and support one another. Topics include goal setting, financial planning for recovery, acceptance, and other self-reflective themes. These groups foster a sense of ownership and responsibility that is essential for sustainable recovery.
What to Expect
Group therapy sessions at Haliford Health Group are conducted regularly as part of your structured treatment programme. Groups are facilitated in a safe, confidential environment where respect, honesty, and active listening are encouraged.
You can expect a combination of process-oriented groups, where members explore personal experiences and emotional responses; psychoeducational groups, where specific topics are taught and discussed; and skills-based groups, where you practise techniques learned in individual therapy. Some groups may be gender-specific to create a space for topics that benefit from a shared perspective.
Participation in group therapy is gradual, and there is no pressure to share before you are ready. Our facilitators are skilled at creating an environment that balances challenge with safety, allowing each individual to engage at their own pace while benefiting from the shared experience of recovery.

Conditions Supported by Group Therapy
Group therapy is a cornerstone of residential addiction and mental health treatment. The therapeutic power of shared experience — hearing others’ stories, offering and receiving support, and practising interpersonal skills in a safe environment — is unique to the group setting and central to lasting recovery.
At Haliford Health Group, structured group therapy sessions are facilitated by qualified clinicians across all three facilities. Groups are kept small to ensure each client receives adequate attention and to foster genuine therapeutic connection. Topics addressed in group sessions include relapse prevention, emotional regulation, family systems, grief, trauma, and life skills for recovery.
Group therapy is delivered alongside individual therapy and psychiatric support as part of each client’s integrated treatment plan, ensuring a well-rounded and clinically robust recovery experience.
