Schema Therapy

Understanding Schema Therapy

What Is Schema Therapy?

Schema Therapy is an integrative psychotherapy developed by Dr Jeffrey Young that addresses the deep-seated emotional patterns, known as “schemas”, that develop in childhood and adolescence and continue to influence behaviour, relationships, and emotional wellbeing throughout adult life. It is particularly effective for individuals whose addiction or mental health challenges are rooted in longstanding patterns that have not responded fully to other therapeutic approaches.

Schemas are enduring themes or patterns that shape how we perceive ourselves, others, and the world. Examples include beliefs of abandonment, defectiveness, emotional deprivation, or mistrust. These core beliefs often develop in response to unmet emotional needs during formative years and can drive individuals towards addictive behaviours as a way of coping with or avoiding the painful emotions they generate.

At Haliford Health Group, schema therapy is offered as part of our integrated treatment approach. Our trained practitioners help you identify your core schemas, understand how they developed, and recognise the ways in which they perpetuate unhealthy coping patterns, including substance use and compulsive behaviours.

Schema therapy draws on elements of cognitive behavioural therapy, attachment theory, psychodynamic approaches, and experiential techniques to create a comprehensive framework for deep, lasting change. Through a combination of cognitive understanding, emotional processing, and behavioural pattern-breaking, you develop healthier ways of meeting your core emotional needs.

What to Expect

Schema therapy at Haliford Health Group is delivered through individual sessions as part of your personalised treatment programme. Your therapist will begin by conducting a detailed assessment of your life history, emotional patterns, and current difficulties to identify your core schemas and coping styles.

Sessions may include cognitive techniques to challenge unhelpful beliefs, experiential exercises such as guided imagery and chair work to process unresolved emotional needs, and behavioural experiments to practise healthier responses in real-world situations. Your therapist creates a safe, nurturing therapeutic relationship, itself a powerful vehicle for healing attachment wounds and unmet needs.

Schema therapy is particularly well-suited to longer treatment programmes, as the patterns it addresses are deeply ingrained. However, even within shorter stays, meaningful progress can be made in identifying core schemas and developing initial strategies for change that continue to inform your recovery journey.

Conditions Treated with Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy is a powerful integrative therapy that addresses deeply held beliefs and patterns — known as schemas — formed in early life. These schemas often drive chronic emotional difficulties, relationship problems, and self-defeating behaviours that persist into adulthood and frequently underlie addiction and mental health conditions.

At Haliford Health Group, Schema Therapy is available across our Cape Town facilities as part of a personalised treatment plan. It is particularly effective for clients with personality disorders, complex trauma, chronic depression, or long-standing emotional difficulties that have not responded adequately to shorter-term therapies.

Our Schema Therapy practitioners work collaboratively with clients to identify core schemas, understand their origins, and develop healthier adaptive modes — building lasting change that goes beyond symptom management.
