Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Understanding Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

What Is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective, evidence-based psychotherapy developed by Dr Francine Shapiro for treating trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is now widely recognised as a frontline treatment for trauma-related conditions by the World Health Organisation and numerous international clinical guidelines.

EMDR is based on the understanding that traumatic experiences can become “stuck” in the brain’s memory networks, continuing to cause distress long after the original event. Through a structured protocol involving bilateral stimulation, typically guided eye movements, EMDR enables the brain to reprocess these memories, reducing their emotional intensity and allowing them to be integrated into your broader life narrative without the same overwhelming distress.

At Haliford Health Group, EMDR is a key component of our trauma-informed treatment approach. Many individuals struggling with addiction have underlying trauma that fuels their substance use or compulsive behaviours. By addressing these root causes through EMDR, we help you break the cycle at its source rather than merely managing symptoms.

Our trained EMDR practitioners guide you through each phase of the protocol in a safe, controlled environment. The therapy does not require you to discuss traumatic events in extensive detail, making it a particularly suitable option for individuals who find traditional talk therapy about trauma overwhelming or re-traumatising.

What to Expect

EMDR follows an eight-phase protocol that begins with a thorough assessment and preparation phase. Your therapist will take time to understand your history, build trust, and equip you with stabilisation techniques before any processing work begins. This ensures you feel safe and resourced throughout the process.

During processing sessions, you will be asked to hold a distressing memory in mind whilst following your therapist’s guided bilateral stimulation. This may involve following the therapist’s hand movements with your eyes, listening to alternating tones, or using tactile cues. The processing typically occurs in focused sets, with pauses for you to share any changes in thoughts, feelings, or sensations.

Most clients report that the emotional charge of targeted memories reduces significantly over the course of treatment. The memories remain, but they no longer carry the same distressing weight. Sessions are integrated into your broader treatment programme, complementing other therapeutic modalities for comprehensive recovery.
