Healing the Whole Family, Because Addiction Affects Everyone

Addiction Is a Disease of the Family, Not Just the Individual

At Haliford Health Group, we recognise that when one member of a family suffers from addiction, the entire family system is affected. Quite often the person struggling with addiction will feel isolated, trapped by their condition and unable to communicate with those closest to them. But while they may feel separate from others, the consequences of their addiction are not.

The effect on family and friends can be devastating. Empathy is a casualty of active addiction and this diminished ability to understand the impact of one’s actions on others serves only to perpetuate the shared pain of the whole family.

Families at this stage are often focused on fixing their loved one, thinking that if they can be fixed, everything will return to normal. That is not the case. If you consider the hurt suffered by loved ones as a form of trauma, then it becomes easier to understand that the family must also go on a journey of recovery.

Our Family Support Programme

Family Education Programme

The Family Support Programme at Haliford Health Group is a resource specifically for the family, not just the individual in treatment. We provide families with the support, education, and tools required to begin their own journey of recovery.

Family Therapy Sessions

Our qualified therapists facilitate a range of family therapy services, including joint sessions where clients and family members work together to reconnect, family-only sessions providing a safe space for family members to process their own experiences, specialised couples therapy for partners navigating the impact of addiction, and multigenerational work addressing family patterns that may span generations.

Family Support Groups

  • Understanding Addiction: Learn about the nature of addiction as a condition, not a moral failing, and what recovery truly requires.
  • Recognising Enabling Behaviours: Identify and change patterns that inadvertently support addictive behaviour, and develop healthier ways to support your loved one.
  • Healthy Communication: Develop effective, loving communication strategies that rebuild connection and restore trust within the family.
  • Boundary Setting: Learn to support recovery without sacrificing your own wellbeing, establishing healthy limits that benefit everyone.
  • Peer Support and Mentorship: Connect with other families facing similar challenges through regular support meetings, peer mentorship from families who have successfully navigated recovery, and educational workshops.

“If we can support the person in recovery and the family to speak honestly and courageously about the difficulties they are facing, and help them understand each other’s point of view, then we can help them reconnect and rebuild that trust. Healthy communication is key.”

Specialised Family Services

  • Family Reintegration: Family sessions that may gradually and safely include children in the recovery process where appropriate.
  • International Family Services: Video family therapy sessions via secure platforms and family visits, including travel and accommodation assistance for families abroad.
  • Time Zone Flexibility: Sessions scheduled at times convenient to family members abroad, with cultural sensitivity and understanding of different family dynamics across cultures.
  • Reintegration Planning: Comprehensive reintegration planning for the client’s return home, ensuring families are prepared and supported through the transition from residential treatment.
